چکیده

The objective of this paper is to discuss how to enable the staff at an orderpackaging department to cope with a drastically increasing scale of operation. In order to do this we introduce the term scalability and based on co-ordination theory we formulate a case specific method for designing for an increasing scale of operation. We argue that it is the co-ordination work that is lacking not the actual productive work performed. We apply our method to the results of an ethnographic field study conducted at the order-packaging department, and design a new work setting adapted to the increasing rate of growth. We state that the design method was very useful in our case, but we need to conduct further empirical studies in order to make a conclusive evaluation of its applicability in a more general sense.

Scalability through Cultivation Using Co-ordination Theory in Design

The objective of this paper is to discuss how to use Information Technology to enable the staff at a mission-critical order packaging department to cope with a drastically increasing scale of operation. To reduce the risk of interrupting the production, a cultivation approach is adopted. We use co-ordination theory to analyse the current work setting and present a design proposal. The basic bui...

Designing for Local Mobility

This thesis investigates the characteristics of local mobility from a CSCW perspective using ethnographically informed workplace studies and presents a framework for designing IT support. In this thesis local mobility is defined as a work related situation where workers move within a specified physical area while performing their tasks. The research is presented in an introductory chapter and f...

On Multiagent Co-Ordination Architectures: A Traffic Management Case Study

This paper reports our experiences with agent-based architectures for Intelligent Traffic Management. We describe and compare TRYS and TRYSA2, two multiagent systems that perform decision support for real time traffic management in the urban motorway network around Barcelona. Both systems draw upon similar traffic management knowledge, but the former is based on a centralised architecture, whil...

Distributed Component Engineering using a Decentralised, Internet-based Environment

Engineering component-based software systems in a distributed fashion is challenging. Particular issues to address include software process and work co-ordination, sharing and collaborative editing of component specifications, designs and implementations, and appropriate sharing of reusable components. This paper describes our approach to tool support for distributed component engineering. Seve...

Seeing What You Are Hearing: Co- ordinating Responses to Trouble Reports in Network Troubleshooting

Real time team co-ordination is a central problem for CSCW, but previous attempts to build novel systems to support it have not been greatly successful. One reason for this is that teams have often evolved highly effective work practices involving paper. In contrast to these prior negative findings, we present an instance of a successful digital system to support real-time co-ordination. Our sy...
